The Modern Error: Or, the Unbearable Enlightenment of Being
The possible resituation of the individualized & desituated subject in modernity is explored through a reading of several works, starting with Arnold Gehlen's paradox of modernity: technology, extending control through the global information & communications networks, on the one hand, & Instinktarmut, represented by the hubristic & aggressive ego of the Faustian individual, on the other. It is argued that the exceptional is now impossible except as this unconstrained Faustian ego. The problem of this Faustian individualism is located in the Enlightenment's assumptions of philosophical nominalism. These abstract & dualist assumptions are also true of aesthetic modernists & aesthetically informed sociologists like George Simmel, & are exacerbated in postmodernist celebrations of contingency & desire in Richard Rorty, Jacques Derrida, & Deleuze. The philosophy of pragmatism of William James, Charles Pierce, & John Dewey is offered as direction in this age of a globalized information order. The focus is on the character of meaning in modernity, a meaning that is always already there, grounded in the emotions, which are not counterposed to, but foundational of, reason. 14 References. V. Zum Vergleich: Die symbolische Selbstrepräsentation der Demokratie: der Fall Amerikas
In: Staatsrepräsentation, p. 131-156
(ICG)

Object Relations, Role Models, and Cultivation of the Self

Psychoanalytic object relations theory and symbolic interactionism both emphasize the mediating role of representations in the socialization process, yet the relationship between the external environment and the constitution of these representations is quite different in the two approaches. The inherent subjectivism of the Freudian tradition is criticized through an examination of the role of personal possessions in the objectification of the self. Valued material possessions, it is argued, act as signs of the self that are essential in theirown right for its continued cultivation, and hence the world of meaning that we create for ourselves, and that creates our selves, extends literally into the objective surroundings.
